Rocket Italian is an online Italian learning system. Does it really work?

WHAT DOES THE SYSTEM LOOK LIKE?

Rocket Italian comes as a CD set or a downloadable package. The system has videos, software, and special audio recordings. In addition, you are given access to the Learning Lounge where you can test your progress, and connect with other students and instructors.

The basic method is teaching Italian by a process called "visual association". Visual association is the way you learned to speak your native language. You SAW something and HEARD the word for it at the same time. In this way you effortlessly and quickly picked up the meanings of words. Rocket Italian tries to replicate this process with the use of video, audio, and software.

HOW WELL DOES IT WORK?

IF you are ready to work with the program in a consistent way, Rocket Italian can be extremely powerful. Ideally, you should attempt to work with the lessons for some time each day (30min to 1hr at least). The lessons are made to build on one another. Because of this, being consistent is crucial.

Picking up a new language is much like learning to ride a bike. For the first 6 or 7 lessons you might think that you are not getting anywhere. If you keep going, however, you will come to a point when things suddenly come together. You will find yourself making sentences without effort and hearing most of the words in the audio recordings.

From there you can go on to add more vocabulary and more advanced grammar.

IS IT FOR EVERYONE?

Some students find it difficult to focus unless there is some outside pressure like an upcoming "exam" or an instructor checking their "homework".

Rocket Italian is a do it yourself system. It is powerful but you have to provide the consistency yourself.

If you feel you need the pressure of a class situation in order to take action, look into classes at a local college. Keep in mind that a class will cost more and can take longer.
