Rodgers & Hammerstein's South Pacific Makes Its Grand Rapids Debut At Devos Performance Hall

Rodgers & Hammerstein's SOUTH PACIFIC makes its Grand Rapids debut at DeVos Performance Hall, playing September 7-12, 2010 as part of the Fifth Third Broadway Grand Rapids series. In 2008 the Winner of seven Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival, this new production of Rodgers & Hammersteins prize winning musical SOUTH PACIFIC, arrives from its sold out Broadway run at Lincoln Center Theater. It is only running six nights from Friday through Sunday, July 9 to 11 and July 15 to 17 at outdoors at the Maui Tropical Plantation, this Rodgers & Hammerstein musical set on a South Seas tropical isle during World War II is not just a beautiful love story it is also a sensitive and truthful look at racial tension and bigotry. The story tells about the loves, losses and challenges of America servicemen and servicewomen stationed on a small island in the World War II. Come early to watch the USO-style pre-show performed by the teens in the cast. They will be singing and dancing their way through a collection of some of the greatest songs to come out of the 1940s.

Rodgers and Hammerstein's full "South Pacific" in an outdoor summer concert at the Idaho Botanical Garden, backed by a complete orchestra. The show is in the middle of a famous Broadway revival. Its themes of war, racism and love strike a resonant chord today, says soprano Leslie Mauldin. Amber Entertainment and Chicago films plan to bring Rodgers & Hammersteins South Pacific to the big screen. Chicago films Bob Balaban says about the remake, Our movie will be a tougher more realistic re-telling of the same classic story. South Pacific, directed by Bartlett Sher, opened at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre on 3 Apr 2008, following previews from 1 Mar, and was originally scheduled to play a limited engagement ending on the 22 Jun 2008. The musical received critical acclaim, and on 4 Apr 2008, just one day after it opened the Lincoln Center announced the show would play an open run.
