Rolf Harris Takes His Art On The Road
Rolf Harris is embarking on a national tour to showcase his latest artwork.
The Australian entertainer was at The Lemongrove Gallery in Reading last weekend to meet his army of fans at his 'A Life in Art' exhibition, which showcases a collection of his artwork in celebration of his eightieth year.
Rolf Harris is touring A Life in Art in Whitewall Galleries across the United Kingdom during Spring 2010 and is appearing in person to discuss his career as an artist.
The collection includes an array of artwork including Rolf Harris prints, lithographs and sculptures.
"It's just a joyful variation of everything that I do. There's some originals in there, but quite a few have sold in recent months," Rolf told the Reading Post.
Rolf is so popular with the British public that organisers of the exhibition have had to issue invitations in a bid to limit the numbers of people coming to view Rolf Harris prints.
He told the Reading Post: "It gives me tremendous pleasure and it's absolutely amazing. At Chester a couple of weeks back, it ran an hour over time. We were just overwhelmed by the numbers and we couldn't believe how many people came along."
Rolf revealed to the Reading Post that his love for art was rekindled when he presented his Rolf on Art television programmes for the BBC, which encouraged children to draw cartoons and engage with art.
He told the newspaper: "I found very early on [when making the shows] I really loved painting and wondered why I hadn't done this for so long. Why has it taken a backseat?"
Rolf studied art at City and Guilds Art School in Kennington after moving to England from Australia aged 22 although he did not enjoy his education and drifted away from the art scene on graduation.
It was only when he met his hero Hayward Veal, an Australian impressionist painter, that he realised a career in art was for him.
Veal took Harris under his wing and became his mentor, teaching him the rudiments of impressionism and showing him how it could help with his portrait painting.
Fans of the showbiz legend will have the chance to bid on Rolf Harris memorabilia at the Good Intentions Fundraising Team event in aid of the Water Rats charirt at Aylsham in June.
Music lovers will be able to see Rolf play his didgeridoo at Glastonbury, Womad and Bestival this Summer.
