A lot of people probably stop at first when they think of window shades because they are probably remembering the window shades from days gone by. Days when the window shades were done in cheap vinyl that would eventually crack and become an eye sore or remember the stark white and dingy yellowish colors they had. That would make anyone shy away from window shades. But the roller shades of today have really come a long way from those dismal days of window shades.

In the market of window treatments today, shades are probably the cheapest way to go if you want a combination of decorative quality and privacy. You also get durability as well as the fact that they are extremely easy to clean. They also take up very little space in your window area and can keep out the sun and heat and are great to block at that glare you might get at certain times of the day.

The ability to control the amount of light that the room gets is a nice feature that comes with shades. With shades you can control the light by rolling the window shades up or down to whatever height that you need.

By having shades you can control the amount of sun you want coming in and warming the room. Control of the window shades can be done with a continuous loop rope that allows you to manually raise or lower your shades. Or for a more expensive way you can always get motorized shades that are controlled with a remote control for lowering or raising the window shades.

Before going out to buy your shades though, it is important that you decide on whether you want to mount your shades on the outside of your window or if you want them mounted on the inside of your window. The easiest and most popular way to mount them would probably be the outside mount. With the inside mount you need to have extremely accurate measurements for the width and length more so than you do with the outside mount.

As for the inside mount you need to measure three parts of the window for width and that is the top, bottom and the middle and take the shortest measurement for the width. Then you need to measure the top of the window to the bottom for length.

Also inside mounts will not work with all windows. Bay windows would be a prime example of a window type that should not have inside mounts. Inside mounts are also a lot more difficult to install on any window. Professionals generally recommend that if you are putting the window shades up yourself to go with the outside mount over the inside mount.

Probably one of the best things outside of the price being less, is the variety of different materials, colors and styles there are to choose from. There are a vast variety of materials all depending upon how much you want to block out as well as what will look good in your room. The colors range from neutral colors to the brightest color on the spectrum. There is a color for every taste. Shades also offer different trims and beautiful decorative hems that add a nice touch of class to any shade and room.
