Roller Shades Offer Great Design Flexibility
Roller shades are probably one of the most versatile
, flexible and inexpensive ways to enhance any room. Almost every box store, hardware or home product store will carry at least some selections of shades for instant installation in your home. Rest assured, if you can not find many options in your local area, there is an almost endless supply online and at your fingertips.
These window shades have used a system designed long ago that allows for the material to be pulled down to the point on the window frame you desire. Then the ratchet system built into the dowel will lock and the shade will stay in place. When you wish to adjust, or retract the shade, a single tug down will allow it to be reset lower or release and retract fully onto the roll. To avoid the risk of tearing, and to avoid smudging the material, there is usually a sting attached to the bottom support.
The shade material can also be cut to sit inside or outside the window frame. This is why it is well worthwhile to take the time to get good measurements when you go to buy your next set. If you do not have the proper clearance for sitting inside the frame, the window shades are apt to catch on the sides and end up becoming torn or wrinkled. If you decide to cover the window entirely, for privacy and best light control, you will want to make sure it is plenty wide enough.
There are many sizes prepackaged and will include the specific hardware to make the ratchet function properly. If you need specific widths, there are now kits available that make it easy to customize them in your home. If you are fortunate enough to have a local store, they may be in a position to cut them for you.
Know that the thickness of the material can make a difference. There are window shades that are made thick enough to block as much light as possible. These are designed for those that might need to sleep in the day or have nagging street lights or signs flooding their rooms with light at night.
These thicker shades also work well to help maintain room temperatures. They can help prevent the sun from warming a room or block drafts and help keep it warm in the cooler months.
Another option would be to find a nylon shade that would be resistant to moisture and molds. These make a very practical addition to bathroom windows. They make an attractive, inexpensive accent, and because they are easy to adjust, they will allow sunlight during the day and provide privacy when needed.
There have seen some recent innovations to improve upon the spring loaded system. There are now "clutch based" rollers that will operate with chains made of metal or plastic. These are pulled through so you can exactly position the window shades where you want them. Because of the design, this type should provide extended life over the older ratchet-type models.
Roller shades with this design are also able to handle greater weights, so now it is possible to cover larger windows with single window shades. This will give you even more flexibility when it comes to finding the style that will accent your current decor and successfully and economically complete your room.
