According to online language school, www.learn2lingo.com, holidaymakers who wished to enjoy a Shirley Valentine style romance missed out on love because they couldn't speak the native language.

The website, which gives lessons in more than 30 languages, has seen an increase in people registering for the service since the start of the summer, with many citing the reason for joining being because they couldn't chat to potential love interests while on holiday.

Shira added:

"It's usual at this time of year to see an increase in members joining the site as they want to learn a few key phrases in the language of a country they've just visited. They can often feel frustrated at not being able to communicate with someone they've met while on holiday abroad.

"According to the Office of National Statistics 56 million UK residents travel abroad on holiday each year, so not being able to speak the native language could mean missing out on finding Mr or Mrs Right. So now is the best time to learn Mandarin."
