The ornate and magnificent Trevi Fountain is a beautiful monument that lies in the heart of Rome

, and is definitely worth a visit if you are staying in the Eternal City. It features a mainly Baroque design and stands at just less than 26 metres high and almost 20 metres wide. The Trevi Fountain has a long history, when in 1629 the Pope wanted to improve the fountain that was originally standing on the piazza. The design went to one of Italy's most famous artists, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, but the ambitious project was shelved when the Pope passed away.

Almost 100 years, the idea was revived by the then Pope who held a competition for the best design. After some controversy due to a non local Roman being giving the work, it was Nicola Salvi who finally won the contract and work on the Trevi Fountain began in 1732. Many of Bernini's original ideas were incorporated into the finished design and the fountain was completed by Giuseppe Pannini in 1762, 11 years after Salvi passed away. Nowadays it is a popular tourist attraction and don't forget to toss a coin into the fountain, as it is meant to assure you of a return visit to the enchanting Eternal City!
