Rome Was Not Built In One Day
When it comes to Rome, it is easy to think of the ever powerful Rome Empire
. However, nowadays, Rome is the capital city of Italy which is located on the Tiber River.
There is an old saying that Rome was not built in one day. It is true. The history of the city spans over two and a half thousand years.
The earliest human presence actually can date back to 14,000 years ago which was always ignored because of the tales of Rome's legendary.
According to the traditional foundation myth, the city was founded by Romulus and Remus in 753 BC, but there is also controversy to say that the date should be in the 8th century BC. The city of Rome has served as capital of the Roman Kingdom, the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire. In spite of some temporary occupations, Rome was hardly defeated.
The Rome Republic was stable and wealthy due to its successful commerce and early civilizations of its neighbor countries like the Etruscans and Greeks. After continuing military victory and conquest, the Rome Empire formed from 27 BC. When it was the time of Emperor Augustus, the empire had a monarchy system rather than dictatorship which was in the time of Julius Caesar. The great Emperor Augustus started reforms in terms of politics, society and economy. Besides, a large scale of construction of the city started which left us a lot of grand and magnificent new buildings and palaces.
The formal borders of Rome Empire extended throughout the Western Europe and the Mediterranean Sea, but its social and cultural influence could extend to the whole western world at that time.
After one thousand years peak time, Rome started to decline. Rome was controlled by the Byzantine Empire and Germanic force. During the same period, Rome became the holy city as the centre of the Catholic Church. Therefore, it is not hard to understand why movies like The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons were shot in Rome.
After the collapse of the Byzantine Empire, Rome was under control of the Popes. Although this was the period full of papal corruptions, Rome was turned to be a centre of art, poetry, music, literature, education and culture. Then, the latter of 15th century witnessed the Italian Renaissance which brought Rome splendid and innovative changes. Rome reached its peak time under Pope Julius II and his successors. The city of Rome boosted a large number of artists. With the influence of the Renaissance, Rome lost part of its religious character and became more vibrant.
Afterwards, the church struggled with reformation and operated revenge. After the reunification of Italy, in 1871, Rome became the capital of the Kingdom of Italy, and in 1946 that of the Italian Republic.
