The Romans have never been a crowd that need much persuading when it comes to throwing a party or having a festival
. In ancient times, an astounding 150 days of the year were set aside for rest and relaxation. Nowadays, the citys residents dont have quite as many days off, however that does not mean there is not an abundance of exciting and entertaining festivals to attend. Some festivals surround religious holidays while others are simply a celebration of music, art and culture. No matter the occasion, Romans love to let their hair down and enjoy a good party.
Natale di Roma: Not every city celebrates their birthday, but this one certainly does! Born in 753 BC, it is a city unlike any other. Every year, on 21 April the city begins the festivities with the lighting of the sacred fire in Piazza del Campidoglio. The party continues with the commemoration of the foundations of the city at Circo Massimo, followed by a concert there. City hall and the piazzas located on the hill are illuminated and from the balcony of any hotels in central Rome you will have a ringside seat - however attending the actual event is certainly an experience that should not be missed.
Festival Internazionale del Film di Roma: The city's film festival began in 2006 and, while it is considerably younger than any other film festival in the world, its iconic cinematic status has already made it an enormous success. Every year throughout the month of October, a variety of different films make their debut at the event. From independent works, house-oriented films, childrens selections and alternative productions the film festival captures the essence of the art of film. The prestigious Rome Film Festival award is a silver statuette shaped after the Roman Emperor Marcus Auerlius, designed by internationally renowned jewellery maker Bulgari. It is presented to the winner of best film, as well as the best actor and actress. Throughout the award ceremony, hotels in central Rome fill up quite quickly and rooms should be booked early.
Campionato Internazionale di Tennis (Italian Open): The Italian Open tennis tournament is held annually during the second week in May. It is the most prestigious red clay tournament in the world after the French Open. It is also one of Europes most important clay-court challenges outside of the Grand Slam and considered to be a warm-up for the French Open. All-star tennis players compete in the tournament every year and world champion, Rafael Nadal has won the title a record six times. This is one of Italys most prestigious sporting events and is attended by tourists and tennis enthusiasts from all over the world. Hotels in central Rome are located within short distance of the event and it is certainly a favourite for any tennis enthusiast.
