Organic or Fibreglass Which one is Better?
Both type of roof shingles look the same, come in various sizes, thicknesses, shapes and colours. Both consist of an inner core that supports the asphalt and granules that cover the inner core. Their prices are relatively the same per bundle.
So what makes organic and fibreglass roof shingles different?
Organic roof shingles are manufactured with an inner core made from recycled news paper and cardboard boxes. They are given the name "organic" because the materials are not synthetic. Not to be confused with "organic" in relation to products that have no toxins like organic vegetables.
Fibreglass roof shingles have an inner core made from fibreglass. It tends to be more durable. On the other hand, it can be less flexible, more stiff in colder climates. Keep in mind that both organic and fibreglass shingles can vary in quality. Like anything else, you can buy a cheap product or a quality product depending on your needs and budget.
Both of these roof shingles are excellent choices though they perform differently.
Temperature is a variable that comes in to play. Fibreglass tends to, on average, perform better in warmer climates. Why? Because the heat allows it to bend and be more flexible. But a less quality fibreglass shingle can be out-performed easily by a quality organic shingle. Fibreglass tends to be more water-resistant because it has trouble absorbing moisture (this is a good thing).

Organic shingles are more flexible and perform better in colder climates. Again, a lesser quality fibreglass shingle can be out-performed by a quality organic shingle. Be aware some fibreglass shingles are made with very low quality fibreglass others are made with the same quality fibreglass used to manufacture air planes.
What's the bottom line?
All things considered, fibreglass is the better choice ONLY if it is a high quality product. CertainTeed is an excellent brand choice (and I'm not saying this because I am affiliated with them almost all the roofing companies I know use CertainTeed). GAF is another excellent brand name.
Whether fibreglass or organic, roof shingles will perform best when they are properly installed.
More Important Bottom Line . . . Installation
The absolute most important consideration you must make when replacing the roof shingles on your home is this: Hire a trusted roofing contractor to install the shingles. If the roof shingles are not installed to exact specifications then all is in vain.
Last Word about Roof Shingles Manufacturer Warranties
They all come with warranties. Some good, some terrible. A shingle warranty outlines the "rules" about how much compensation you receive if the shingles you purchase are defective, whether organic or fibreglass. Most warranties don't offer much but the warranties for higher quality roof shingles are superior.
So be sure to ask the roofing supply store, or your roofing contractor about the specifics of the warranty. It's not likely that the shingles you buy will be defective, but it's good to know your options.
