Roof Ventilation - Is It So Freaking Important?

Roof ventilation is one of those details in life that rarely makes it to the forefront of our mind

. In fact, most of us only think about it when a problem happens to the roof or attic. Roof ventilation, including roof insulation can help you live in much more comfort and save money on home heating and cooling.

Why, you ask?

Imagine a tropical rain forest inside your attic. All that heat and moisture. What do you think all this heat and moisture does? You guessed it. DAMAGE. It plays total havoc to the framing, the insulation, and the roof deck just to name a few.

During the hot summer months, trapped heat collects in the attic and sooner or later begins to migrate down in to your home's living areas, especially the top bedroom floors. Many people are often confused about why the bedrooms are so hot at night even when the air conditioner is on full blast. Well, now you know . . . trapped hot air in the attic is moving downwards because it cannot move upwards.

Why can't the hot air escape and be freed out the top of your roof? You guessed it again: lack of proper roof ventilation. Roof ventilation is required so heat and moisture can be pushed out the top of your roof. This happens easily if the following 2 conditions are met:

Adequate soffit vents intake ventilation

Adequate ridge vents exhaust ventilation

The soffit vents take air in; the ridge vents let air out. This constant movement of fresh air traveling from the bottom of the roof to the top of the roof is the key to successful roof ventilation. It keeps the temperature just where it needs to be.

What is the ideal temperature of your attic? As close to outside temperature as possible. If on a hot summer day the temperature is 92 degrees, then the attic temperature needs to be roughly 92 degrees.

If on a cold day in the winter the temperature is 10 degrees, then the attic temperature needs to be very close to 10 degrees.

As you can see, this is not rocket science. Yet 90% of all residential homes have very bad roof ventilation. Did you know that bad roof ventilation will make the shingles on your roof fall apart after 8 eight years, even when the shingles were designed to last for 25 years?

Roof ventilation, if properly done will verify shingle warranties so you will not need to replace the shingles every 8 years. It will also prevent your roof insulation from losing it's insulating properties.

Is roof ventilation important? YES! When considering the cost of premature shingle rot, roof structure damage, home heating and cooling costs (and bug infestation little bugs and critter just love moist rotting conditions) the savings are substantial.

Do yourself a big favour and have your roof ventilation checked by an expert. Most roof ventilation companies will inspect your attic for free, or perhaps a minor fee.

It is well worth the time and money.
