Room Additions - The Sun Room

Sun room additions have been regaining popularity over the last few years but they

do not always have to constitute as huge a remodeling project as you might imagine. In fact adding a sun room can be a great way to put unused space to a more useful purpose.

When deciding where to actually put your sun room it helps to track the way the sun itself moves around your home. Sun rooms are at their best when the main windows face the solar south. Keep in mind though that the solar south is not always the same as compass south.

Most sun rooms have a glass roof but if the room is going to be in an area with major exposure to the sun you may want to consider having a roof constructed that is only partially made of glass or enclosing it altogether and using glass only for the walls. If you do decide to opt for an enclosed roof adding skylights is a great way to let a little more light in without overheating the room.

Having good ventilation in your sun room is important, otherwise you may end up feeling like a plant in a greenhouse before your first day of relaxation in it is over. Openable windows are an economical way to easily ventilate your sun room but they may not do so very effectively on a hot, humid day. Having a ceiling fan or two installed will not only be more effective but can add a lot to the aesthetic appeal of the room as well.

What you actually use your sun room for is up to you. You could choose to make it an extension of the living or dining room, install a wet bar to expand your entertaining options or as a place to add a hot tub or a home gym. As long as you find a good remodeling contractor to help you bring your vision to life the possibilities are almost endless.
