Root Canal Procedures Can Save Your Tooth From Decay

Most people think that root canal procedures are very painful and unpleasant

. But thanks to modern techniques and technology, most people who undergo a root canal treatment report nothing even close to this assessment. In addition, a root canal procedure is often the last way that your dentist can save a heavily decayed tooth from extraction. A root canal is used to clear out infected material on the inside of your tooth. Once the decay has spread to your pulp, the tooth will die if the inside is not removed. If you are experiencing tooth pain, contact your dentist as soon as possible to see if you need a root canal to remedy the problem.

How Does The Process Work?

When you go in to see your dentist, he or she will usually begin by taking an X-ray to see what is going on visually inside of your tooth. If he or she finds that a root canal is necessary, they will begin by anesthetizing your tooth and drilling a hole into the center of your tooth. Your dentist will remove all of the pulp and infected material on the inside of your tooth using root canal files. Water and a chemical will also be used to remove the last of the infected material. After all of the material is flushed out, your tooth will need to be sealed. Your dentist will use a sealer paste and a rubber compound to fill the inside of the tooth. This will ensure that no infection will make its way into the center of your tooth again. After the inside is sealed, your dentist will place a filling in the access hole to permanently close off your tooth. In many cases, the final step is to place a restoration on top of the tooth. Many times the tooth is severely decayed so generally a crown is put on top of it to stabilize the tooth.

What Will You Experience After The Procedure?

After your procedure is completed, it is not uncommon for you to experience some mild pain. To deal with this, you can use over the counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or Tylenol. On the day of the procedure, you will need to rest, but the next day you will be free to resume your normal activities.

Root canals are highly successful and are more than 95% successful. After your procedure, all you need to do to maintain the health of your repaired tooth is to brush and floss normally. Since many people need root canal procedures because their teeth are severely decayed, it can be very important to develop good habits for cleaning your teeth and gums.
