Rosary Beads, An Overview
Rosary beads date back to the twelfth century
, when Mary appeared to Saint Dominic and said he would find peace if he spread the rosary's devotions.
When the first rosaries were made, the number of beads in a set was 150 which corresponded with the number of psalms in the bible. This number is still used, although there are variations of one third and two thirds, representing different types of prayer.
Originally the beads were carried in an individuals pocket and each would be held in turn as each prayers proceeded. Eventually it became popular to string them together, using either thread or cord to create a circle. Later silk thread was used and more recently metal links are the more common method of linking the beads together.
Originally rosary beads were made of bone and stone, and later wood, glass, metals and precious stones were used instead. In poorer countries people used whatever nature provided, such as berries, seeds and flowers. Nowadays different precious metals and gems stones are used and the choice of gem stones is extensive and a very personal one, representing an individuals own connection with his or her faith.
Gold, silver and platinum are ideally suited to making rosary beads as are gem stones such as amethyst, moonstone, jade and onyx. A gemstone representing your birth sign may have particular relevance.
Rosary beads also make ideal first communion gifts from parents or close family to a child who perhaps does not have there own rosary. It marks this special event in a childs life with a gift that will hopefully last them a lifetime. In this instance gold or sterling silver rosary beads would be a perfect investment and last far longer than gold or silver plate.
Rosary bead necklaces have been worn for hundreds of years to protect against evil and provide comfort in times of need.In this form there is the advantage of always being close to hand. Rosary bracelets and rings are also popular.
It was inevitable that an object that has personal and religious significance should become fashionable once seen being worn by a high profile celebrity. Rosary necklaces became fashionable purely as a fashion statement fairly recently and have become popular when used with religious pendants such as crosses. Needless to say, this non religious use is frowned upon by the Catholic Church.
