Roulette Systems - Does Martingale Theory Actually Work?
Roulette systems are, how do I put this..
Roulette systems are, how do I put this... hocum. And the people who endorse them are either misguided optimists or down right scoundrels who are after your money - usually by charging a fee for their system, or giving it for free whilst sending you to an affiliated online casino.
There are many variations, but at the end of the day most roulette systems come back to the same principle - the martingale theory. The martingale theory involves betting on a colour and doubling your wager every time you lose. The problem with this approach is that it often produces many many small wins which reinforces the idea that the system works. But then comes one BIG loss - and of course, there is no way of knowing when that loss will be.
The big loss comes when you run out of money and can no longer place any bets large enough to cover your losses - you may be surprised at how quickly a $1 initial bet can turn into a heart thumping wager. Ten losses in a row would require just over $1,000 whilst a 20 run loss would take over $1,000,000. Now we agree that a 20 run loss is unlikely, but so is the chance that you have anywhere near $1,000,000 to gamble with. And you need to remember that that is what it is - a gamble.
Think of it as a reverse lottery - instead of buying a ticket for a buck and winning a million, every time you play you are given a dollar, and if you "win" you lose a million.
If you are still in any doubt (and consequentially would rather believe the liars, scoundrels and fools who push such systems) then think about the following. If a casino game such roulette were beatable, would the game still exist? Surely land based casinos would be tearing out roulette tables and replacing them with endless banks of colourful slot machines, and online casinos would be hitting the delete key faster than a woodpecker with tourettes.
I know that there will be some among you who still think that there may be something in the system, and for those I ask just one thing - try it on the "play for fun" setting first.
