Roundworms In Puppies

Usually, dogs will be infected with roundworms because their mother had them

. If a mother has roundworms, her puppies can get them even before they come into this world. The roundworms larvae will also go through mammary glands, so the puppy can also be infected through the mother's milk.

Roundworms are also easily transmitted to humans. Young children are most susceptible because they are always sticking their fingers in their mouths! Roundworms are transmitted to humans and dogs through eggs that are in a dog or puppy's stool.

After roundworm eggs are swallowed, they hatch into larvae in the dog's stomach and intestines and migrate to the lungs or other tissue areas. While in the lungs, the larvae are coughed up and swallowed into the intestines to mature. Adult roundworms produce new eggs which are pass out in the feces.

The Roundworm breeds by laying eggs which are passed out of the dog via its stool. These eggs can live in the soil for long periods of time and once the soil is swallowed the whole cycle starts over again. The first signs of a puppy having Roundworm is that it tends to develop a round, bulging belly and as the worm becomes bigger inside the pup so does the pot belly effect.

The eggs of these roundworms can also survive in the environment for ages and this represents a third possible route of infection for puppies. And as we know, puppies are naturally curious and spend the best part of their early lives with their noses and mouths very close to the ground, investigating and chewing anything and everything.

Roundworms, especially the ascarids, are very common in puppies. In fact one could go so far as to say that a puppy without a roundworm infection is an anomaly. Symptoms displayed by a puppy with a roundworm infestation vary from no symptoms at all to one or more of the following - vomiting, diarrhea, poor growth, anaemia, and a dull haircoat.
