Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens: The Heritage Of Two Hundred Years

The Tasmanian capital of Hobart has long been one of the most sought-after destinations of nature-lovers

. Founded in 1803 as a British penal colony, the city yet retains its complacent old-world air of being in close commune with natural beauty, from the snow-capped mountains rising into the horizon to the lazy foliage that sprawl in a vista of greenery all around the estuary of the meandering Derwent River. The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens (RTBG) is a popular recreational destination which encapsulates the best of the islands floral bounty.

The RTBG is Australias second-oldest Botanical garden, having been founded in 1818, and covers 35 acres of land within the Queens Domain. Originally frequented by Aboriginal tribes before its annexation by the Europeans, the grounds were at first used as a repository of plants needed for food and economic crops as the early settlers imported thousands of fruit trees and vines for the development of the new colony. Thanks to this, the RTBG today holds a historic plant collection that traces their lineage back to this era.

Today, the gardens act as a conservatory for Tasmanian indigenous varieties such as Kings Lomatia and also boasts the worlds only Sub Antarctic Plant House. This displays rare plants from sub Antarctic islands such as Macquarie Island in a climate-controlled environment. These collections are supplemented by conifers and more species of flora from the southern hemisphere.

The RTBG builds a rapport with its visitors and the local community through a series of major and minor community events. The iconic Tulip Festival, now a 20-year-old tradition, is a two-day celebration of Spring and the Huskies' Picnic is an animated crowd-pleaser incorporating ice-carving, husky-races and photographic exhibitions showcasing the beauty of the frozen Antarctic. The garden also hosts a summer theatre programme and special family occasions, such as weddings.

Exploration of the citys natural attractions as well as the culturally rich city center is easy for a visitor staying at any of the centralized hotels and apartment accommodation Hobart. For the traveler who prefers a superior holiday experience, luxury serviced apartments Hobart would cater to the finest detail. The popular tourist destination is home to many luxury residences such as Somerset on the Pier, which is ideally placed in the city centre with panoramic views of the River Derwent.
