Royalty free music is designed to be used legally in places like web sites. Almost all music is protected by copyright and if you're found to be using or sharing it illegally, all hell will let loose and you'd better be prepared to handle some pretty scary legal letters. So if you want to use music on your website, royalty free is definitely the way to go.

It's important to realize that just because something is termed royalty free doesn't mean that it doesn't cost anything. We have a complicated system with regards to music and other works (books, movies, etc) that is designed to make sure that the artist who created something in the first place doesn't end up begging on the street, even if their work is everywhere.

Normal music attracts a fee every time it's played. In olden days, this used to be called needle time for radio stations. The fee varies according to the potential audience. Which since your website could have just a handful of visitors or many millions or anywhere inbetween, that probably isn't a route you want to go down, even if you could get permission from your favorite artist.

Royalty free music involves "buying out" the author's right to receive a fee every time the track is played. Which is why CDs with these tracks on are often more expensive at first sight than their regular counterpart because the author is giving up their right to future royalties every time the track is played.

It also pays to read the small print before you buy - some licence agreements restrict where you can use the track, others limit the number of times the track can be played, yet others have no real restrictions. If in doubt, ask the vendor before you buy - it's a lot easier to do at the pre-sale stage than after the event when those money grabbing lawyers decide to breathe down your neck!
