Rubber stamps are some of the most common yet necessary pieces of office stationery. With a rubber stamp you can easily imprint details including addresses, dates and logos onto various documents including company stationery, cheques, invoices and mail. Rubber stamping was previously confined to business or commercial functions but currently more and more people are taking to the use of rubber stamps in creating works of art.

Generally speaking, five of the most common types of rubber stamps around include the following:

i. Small general purpose rubber stamps A rubber stamp in this category tends to have small dimensions and can be of the traditional or self-inking variety. Such stamps will mostly feature address details and/or other generally used designs.

ii. Large general purpose rubber stamps These rubber stamps are an enlarged version of the above category. They are required when the rubber stamping needs to be done on a larger area and when the needed impressions contain many details.

iii. Date stamps These rubber stamps are used to indicate date details on various documents. Such a rubber stamp is designed to provide you with the required date, month and year digits for a number of years to come, say twelve or so; all you need to do is adjust these digits to get the accurate date. If so required, various text details can be added to the stamp design.

iv. Pocket stamps Some people's businesses require them to be always on the go. For their rubber stamping requirements they can opt for pocket rubber stamps as these can conveniently fit in their pockets or purses.

v. Signature rubber stamps These rubber stamps can be used for office work or even for artistic roles. The design of the stamp features a quality reproduction of one's signature with the option of adding some accompanying text for more personalization.

Pre-inked rubber stamps feature a die into which the ink is impregnated and hence no separate ink pad is needed. The die is that part of the rubber stamp on which the design is made. With successive rubber stamping the ink is replenished on the design until none is left, several thousand impressions later. The quality of print produced is excellent, even at 5pt text. These rubber stamps can be quite expensive.

Self inking stamps are designed to include an in-built ink pad. Upon rubber stamping the self inking rubber stamp will re-ink automatically, ready for the next impression. While the ink cartridge is good to go for thousands of impressions, the longevity cannot match what the pre-inked rubber stamp offers. You can however replace the self inking rubber stamp cartridge quite easily, such that you can continue using the stamp for much longer.

Traditional rubber stamps, compared to the two aforementioned varieties, are the cheapest types of stamps owing to the fact that for their use you need to buy an ink pad separately. This basically implies that you can have several of these rubber stamps and use a single ink pad for all of them. The quality of rubber stamping achieved is inferior to that possible with the pre-inked and self inking rubber stamps as it is not possible to exert uniform pressure when using the stamp.
