Rugby is a team sport that was derived from the original football. Also known as rugby football, the sport got its name from the school where the game originated. The sport is very popular in countries such as the United Kingdom, France, parts of South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Because of the presence of American football, the sport has gained only minor popularity in the United States.

Rugby is scored by bringing the ball in the "in goal" area of the opposing team and grounding it there. This is known as a "try" and is the rugby equivalent of a touchdown. After a successful try, the player gets a free kick, scoring more points. Other ways of scoring involves penalty kicks and drop-kicking the ball instead of a touchdown.

Rugby is played by two teams, each consisting of 15 members. 8 members serve as "forwards", which is the equivalent of linemen in American football. There are no substitutions allowed in Rugby, so if a team member is unable to play because of injury or penalty, the team has to continue with one less player. Unlike in American football, players are not allowed to block opposing team members that are not holding the ball

Rugby games last for about 80 minutes, divided into two 40 minute periods. The half-time break does not last more than five minutes, and delays during playing periods can only reach up to two minutes. The entire game is monitored by a single referee and a pair of touch judges on both ends of the playing field. Aside from being the only person that enforces the rules, the referee is the only time keeper in a rugby match. Touch judges raise a flag if a successful goal is made.

Rugby games are played both in professional and amateur leagues in many countries. These games are all mediated by the Rugby League International Federation. There are numerous rugby competitions played around the world including Russia and Lebanon as well as countries in Europe and Australia. The most prestigious professional competitions are the National Rugby League in Australia and the Super League in Europe.

Rugby games are played not just by adult men. There is a significant presence of all-women teams, which participate in female Rugby leagues. Younger players also participate in minor leagues. Some leagues use smaller sized balls and fields to suit younger players.
