Basically, materials used for rug making is divided into two general categories: natural and synthetic. Natural materials are elements that drawn out of the beauty of nature such as animal and plant fibers. Other materials such as wool and cotton are also sub categorized under natural materials. While nylon, rayon and polypropylene go under the category of synthetic materials which are made by humans through mixture of different elements are used to come up with such materials. With these two categories alone, we can come up with many differences among rugs thus it is important which rug is made out of that.
Let's first talk about wool and cotton as the main material for naturally made rugs. Rugs made out of wool are said to be the most durable rugs made because of its content that is actually fire resistant and aside from that it does not hold too much water and is not a place for stains to stay. Aside from that rugs made out of wool are more enduring to our health because it does not attract dust that much making it a less allergenic type of rug. Wool came from the thick fur of sheep which is trimmed down to maintain the sheep's hygiene, but our ancestors have this great idea of making this fur into a coat and later on rugs. Another material is the cotton, which are fibers taken out from plants and made into rugs. This material is most beneficial for rugs that are designed to have lots of dye decoration for it will pave the way for faster absorption. One example of a rug made out of cotton is the sisal rug which is widely used in Central America.
Next on the list are the synthetic materials which are made from wood, gases and fibers that are mixed with other fibers to come up with one material. Rayon are materials made out of the cellulose of trees and it can be melt easily once it will be ignite with fire. Another is the nylon, which is the most considered material when making rugs that are placed on areas where most of the heavy objects are placed or where people would stay because it has this strong kind of hold that can endure lots of movement; lastly the polypropylene which actually came from fiber gases and made into one material capable of making pieces of rugs.
