Running Tips - Getting Water During Your Long Training Runs

Staying properly hydrated is extremely important for runners - especially when they are on a long distance training run

. However, making sure that you are getting water when you need it can be tricky and takes a little planning on your part. But, it can be done. Here are some tips for getting water during your long distance run.

If you are running for a period longer than an hour, you need to take in 6 - 8 ounces of water every 30 minutes. So, you need to plan where and how you'll get your water. There are several different types of hydration systems that are made for runners.

These are made to be worn or carried by the runner during their runs. You can get these hydration systems as a belt you wear around your waist, a back pack with a tube that the water feeds through or a bottle with a strap that velcros around your hand that you can carry with you. Any of these work well if you don't mind carrying your water with you.

However, many runners (including me!), don't like to be weighed down by carrying their water with them. I know that these hydration systems work well and many runners love them, but they are just not for me. But, I can appreciate them. I plan my long runs so that I can stop for my water along the way.

One of the ways that I get water is at parks or anywhere that there is a water fountain. If you aren't aware of any parks in your area, do a little research. There are also ballparks in many areas that have a water fountain. Whenever you are just driving around you'll be surprised where you may find a water fountain.

Another way that I get water on the road is by convenience store stops. I used to carry a dollar or two with me (depending on how far I was running) for my water. I was so excited when the dollar coins came out! Now, I can carry a couple of those with me - and not be embarrassed to hand a convenience store worker a soggy dollar! Convenience store stops also are good if you are running longer than 1 hours and want to add a sports drink into your hydration.

Finding water on the run just takes a little planning on your part. But, once you find out where you can find water, or carry your water with you, it becomes second nature to you.
