Running Tips - Tips For Running Safely

Running is a wonderful exercise for staying in shape and staying healthy

. But, you need to follow some guidelines for running outside. These tips will help you to run safely and give your loved ones peace of mind while you are out on the roads. Read on for safety guidelines for runners.

First of all, you always want to run facing traffic. You need to be aware of oncoming cars so that you can move out of the way in case they do not see you. And, don't assume that they can see you - they may be distracted by kids, the sun, traffic, etc. Always be alert to oncoming cars.

You want to make sure that oncoming cars can see you. If it is before dawn or after sunset, you need to wear something reflective. There are many different items that are available now that are reflective - vests, arm bands, caps, shorts, jackets, etc. It doesn't matter what you use - just make sure that you are wearing something so that you are visible. If it's during the day, it's still a good idea to wear light and bright colored clothing.

Make sure you are aware of the terrain that you are running on. Even if you are running a road or sidewalk that you've run hundreds of time, you need to watch where you are going. There could be a new pothole, some sort of trash or debris that you could trip over, a crack in the sidewalk or even tree roots.

In addition to your running path, you want to be aware of your surroundings. Keep an eye out for dogs, other runners, cyclists, etc. Also, be aware of anything that doesn't feel quite right to you. If something or someone makes you feel uncomfortable, turn around and go in another direction. It's probably nothing, but it's better to be safe.

And, what I feel is of the utmost importance - especially for long distance runners. Make sure that you are wearing or carrying some sort of identification with you. Many runners run with their driver's license, but I like to run with an identification bracelet. RoadID makes great items for runners and cyclists. You can get an ID that velcros onto your shoe - or my favorite is a bracelet - you don't even know that you are wearing it. You should have your name, your address, your emergency contact and their phone number. My husband is so happy that I wear mine when I go out to run.

Running safely is something that all runners need to do. If you follow the above tips, you should be fine out on the roads.
