Running Tips - Using The Porta-potty At A Road Race

If you are running any road races or thinking about it - the porta-potty will come to be one of your best friends

. You may have steered clear of them in your past life, but you will learn to love them and look for them as you run races. Here are some tips for using these necessary evils.

First of all, when you arrive at the staging area of the race, find where the porta-potties are located. They may be in different areas - some of which may not have as long lines as others. If it is a major race, I'll go on and get in line when I first get there. Then, when I get out, I'll just get back in line again. At some bigger races, it may take 10 minutes or so to get through the line. So, you need to plan accordingly.

Carry toilet paper with you. Most races are properly stocked and prepared for race day, but it never hurts to have some with you. Chances are you won't need it - but it's better to be prepared.

Look for the lines with the most male runners in them. Sorry ladies, it's just a fact that it takes us a little longer than it does men. Not a bad thing, just a statement of fact. So, if you are cutting it short in getting to the starting line on time, look for the line with the most men.

Remember to lock the door when you get in the potty. You'd be surprised how many runners forget to do that. Most of the time, it's alright because people are watching the doors for people to come out. But, there's the chance that they didn't see you go in, and will catch you how you may not want to be caught.

I know it goes without saying, but you should try to hover when you're using the porta-potty. I'm not a germaphobe, but, I would never actually sit on the seat. Learning to hover may take you some practice, but it's easily mastered. One thing that will help is to hold onto the door in front of you. This will help you to stay balanced and hovering safely.

When you leave the porta-potty, take a second to look around. I've been in many a porta-potty and found things that other runners have left in there. It may only be a water bottle, but make sure you take everything with you.

Porta-potties are something that you will learn to love to see at a race. There may even be times in longer races, such as marathons, where you will love seeing them during the race. Hopefully these tips will help you with any phobia you have of porta-potties and you'll learn to love them, too!
