Rust-en-Vrede was built in the 1840's to serve as a prison and police headquarters, the building was then used as a magistrate's court. In 1901, when Durbanville became a municipality, early council meetings were also held at Rust-en-Vrede.

This pink, three story building was sold to a clockmaker in 1927, who converted it into four semi-detached houses, named The Oaks, Ingle Nook, My Vreugd and The Retreat. The municipality purchased the property from the Meneely estate in 1978 and restoration of the building started soon afterwards. In 1981 the Durbanville Cultural Society was established, which together with the council, was given permission to run the building as an arts and culture center.

Rust-en-vrede gallery has three exhibition spaces, Salon A, Salon B and Salon C, the last is used for small solo or group exhibitions. The Rust-en-vrede gallery complex includes a clay museum, a few art studios and the gallery caf. The Clay museum showcases 90 small ceramic pieces by various ceramicists, which may be purchased to decorate ones Cape Town luxury apartments.

The gallery has exhibited the likes of well known South African artists, Theo Kleynhans, Christiaan Diedericks, Pamela Stretton, Judy Woodburne and Lionel Smit.
