Rustic Ceiling Lighting Can Add A Beautiful Piece Of Americana To Your Home Or Office

For various reasons, I have spent a lot of time in Jackson

, Wyoming and Yellowstone National Park. Being major tourist attractions, a lot of thought and effort has gone into preserving both the environment and rustic feel of both the town and the park. All of downtown Jackson has been preserved to look like it did in the days of the Old West, and my favorite place to stay in Yellowstone is the Old Faithful Inn.

Built around 1904, the building has been carefully tended and added to over the years with an eye to preserving the original rustic look and feel of the design. The most striking features are the light fixtures. Crafted in the early days of electric lighting, the Inn still sports its original rustic ceiling lighting, made of copper, iron, and wood.

I shudder to think what places like the Old Faithful Inn would look like had the lighting been swapped out for something more "functional." Laboratories are functional; living spaces are to be enjoyed. If I have to choose between something sterile and something decorative for my home or office, decorative will win out almost every time.

Finding the right rustic ceiling light for home or office can be a bit of a challenge. You don't want to choose something that totally clashes with the existing decor and feel of the room. The problem with finding items at antique shops is that while they may be beautiful, they usually need to be rewired and refitted to be brought up to existing electrical codes. Many home improvement stores carry a limited line of rustic home lighting, but to find what you really want, the best place to turn is the Internet.

My new home has an unfinished basement with plenty of room, and we are still in the planning stages of what we want to do with it. The ceiling is a little low, so chandeliers might not be a good fit, but we are definitely considering a few rustic ceiling lights and maybe a nice island like for a billiards table. I saw a nice rustic floor lamp that will probably fit the bill as well.

So we have our work cut out for our home improvements for the rest of the winter. Hopefully, when spring rolls around, we'll have the basement decked out to resemble a bit of the rustic look and feel that I have seen in Yellowstone. We can't always manage to get away for a vacation, but at least we can pretend!
