SAGE: The Test that Screens for Early Dementia

November is dedicated to Alzheimer's disease. This month gives us the opportunity to reflect on those who have been touched by this dreaded disease. Researchers are working on all fronts to slow the onslaught and find a cure for this disease. Every day 1, 232 people are diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Researchers in the field of Neurology at the Ohio State University Medical Center were able to develop the Self-Administered Gerocognitive Examination (SAGE) which can help to identify memory impairments at an early age. The research showed that four out five people who have impaired thinking will be detected by the test.

The test is handwritten and only takes 15 minutes. The SAGE test as it is called is "designed to test various parts of the brain linked to certain functions" Dr. Scharre, developer of the test explained. There are 4 forms of the test, however patients should choose one. The person taking the test should be allowed to do so without help. The SAGE test is available online for download. However, Dr. Scharre, recommends taking it with a healthcare professional. He believes that this is necessary for accurate interpretation of the results.

Although this test is not foolproof, it could help detect a decrease in cognitive function early. It must be noted that the Sage test is not meant to diagnose Alzheimer's disease or dementia. The results of the test could help identify persons with impaired mental functioning. Accordingly if such a person has Alzheimer's disease a diagnosis could be made much earlier. Early diagnosis leads to early treatment which can lead to better outcomes.

The SAGE test is low cost and easy to administer. It would be especially helpful if the test was given by the patient's own family doctor. The results would be able to assist the physician in developing a plan of care to deal with the brain impairment. For example, persons with other medical problems could be monitored more closely. The SAGE test is one more way to help fight this disease,
