SC2 Protoss Vs. Zerg Guide
In all interchanges during in-game battles, the best method to winning is by overwhelming the enemy with the intelligent use of your forces
. Generally, this boils down to greater resources and production than your opponent. However, when it comes to the Starcraft 2 Protoss vs. Zerg battle, you will have a hard time matching the Zerg's quantity of units, at least in the beginning stages. Thus, you must avoid using a quantitative strategy and look more towards a qualitative one until you have given your builds enough time to produce a significant amount of warriors.
When playing with the Protoss, their greatest advantage against the Zerg is their technological prowess. Pound per pound, Protoss have more power in each hit. If you want to defeat a great Zerg opponent, you must make precise judgment calls on builds and units throughout each phase of the battle. Look to expand quickly and prolong the life of every unit. Accuracy and timing for every wave of production will enable you to capitalize on the Zerg's weaknesses.
Phase 1: First Rush
Once they've initiated their first rush (which is the fastest in the game), the Zerg take the most time to build up their swarm of units and buildings. Use this to your advantage by sending out an early mass attack. If you allow the Zerg to expand its army without exploiting this weakness, the game will likely last longer than you'd hoped for. A great tip is to generate an air rush because a Zerg Lair will take much time to complete. Another effective way to cripple the Zerg early is by building up a mass of Zealots that you can use to attack a Zerg base. When doing this however, you need to watch out for Spine Crawlers which can change locations and cause your forces a lot of problems.
Phase 2: Counter and Mid-game
As you move into the second phase of the match, you'll want to construct a choke that channels enemies down one narrow point of attacking your base. Then, once they've arrived at the end of the choke, make sure you've situated your ground units in front of the Gateway and Pylon near the ramp of the base. This will allow you to pick off any Zerglings that are trying to invade the base or destroy your minerals. Don't underestimate a Zerglings abilities, they can cause you a lot of problems when trying to conduct new builds.
Also, you always want to keep an eye on your Zerg opponent's activities. A mass expansion of Zerg units can be fatal to your Protoss forces. Thus, If you've allowed a Zerg opponent to expand his swarm in the early stages, you need to match this strategy or cut down his efforts with your own offensive attack.
