SEO expert: Website Optimisation: Level I
Ok! Now lets get going with the first few things necessary to achieve the target of best SEO optimisation of your website
. Before you decide to host your website first make sure that you check the following before you decide on a webhosting firm.
# What would be your affordable budget?
This is answered later on in the text.
# Would you prefer a shared hosting or a dedicated hosting?
Shared hosting is the one where one IP address is shared by a number of websites hosted. And so are the resources shared. Hence, the data transfer speed is less compared to the latter. Shared hosting is cheaper as a result and would suit most of the first time website hosters. If however, you need to choose a shared hosting provider, first do check on the server uptime status, connection speeds, data transfer limits and no of practically feasible simultaneous connections. Website hosts with 99% and above uptime should only be preferred. Also, make sure that the webhosting provider does not overload one IP address with more than 200-250 websites. If you take care of these it will not only keep your websites up and running but also assist you in the SEO of your website. Search engine spiders normally do not tend to visit websites which have higher connection times or hosts whose uptime is less than 99%. So if you want your websites to get indexed properly in the search engines then do take care of these points

This file helps the search engine spiders in deciding which folders or files to index. Even if your website is properly search engine optimised but do not have a proper robots.txt file, its effectiveness will be reduced drastically. I will discuss on proper robots.txt file in another post in detail
#Compression of HTML files and images
Highly compressed html files and images help load your website faster (reducing web load times) thereby giving indication to search engine spiders of a properly optimised website. Also, it will make your site user firendly as for the user he/she will not need to wait for it to load for a longtime.
With file compression like GZIP, you can reduce the size of your web page files by up to 70%, which equals faster loading time. You can achieve this by setting up a "zipped" or compressed version of the file on your server side, which is smaller and therefore, takes less time to send over to your user's browser. The file is then decompressed or "unpacked" quickly on the user's side, resulting in a faster file transfer. We will discuss in detail in my post specifically on ths topic
#Deciding on the Navigation Structure of Your Website
This sounds pretty simple but it isn't. Like a well organised maual or a book, your website structure should be organised in such a way that represents indexing of your website pages as per the targetted/relevant keywords for your website. Say, for eg your website is dedicated to Shoes and your index page is clubbed with black shoes, brown shoes, white shoes, high heel shoes, ladies shoes, mens shoes etc keywords, it will create a goobbled up architecture for your website and give a poor picture to the search engines. Infact, you should concentrate on your index page in such a way that your index page just represents shoes. Now when you drill down to sub-pages or sub-theme of your website, then each page should have sub-theme to a relevant keyword, for eg: the color of the shoe. When you click 'types of shoes' on the index page, you get various sub-theme options. Depending on the options say you choose the option/sub-theme 'Black Shoes'. This page should reflect the theme for black shoes every where relevant on the page. Anchor text, image text, meta tags, meta keyword tags, H1 headings, H2 headings should all have keyword phrases using the keyword: Black Shoes. Also, make sure that your sentences and headings do not have any grammatical mistakes. Webspiders are getting smarter these days and mistakes like these are treated at par with spam. So be cautious. Also, in the sub-theme page create further linking to further sub-themes but try not to go deeper than 2-3 levels. Proper inter-linking of sub-theme pages will enhance the Page rank for each individual pages.
Make sure your website structure is not heavily nested. In simple words, if indexing is complex for a book, it cant be followed by a layman then it is of no use. A well indexed book is the one which is user friendly and understandable to a layman. The same approach is taken by the web spiders. Hence, give due importance to this. Do not ignore this fact at All.
