SERVICES OF HANDS FOR FLOOD AFFECTED PEOPLE OF PAKISTAN

Floods have caused severe damages to housing infrastructure in SINDH

. In several cases, whole cities, town villages have been wiped out, and in many cases, though houses were fully damaged, which are uninhabitable. Flood made many communities inaccessible due to destroyed roads and collapsed bridges. In addition Floods have not only caused damages to housing infrastructure, but have destroyed or swept away, have limited access to health services; a number of health facilities in certain locations, e.g. in particular Sukkur, Shikarpur, Kashmore ,Jacobabad, Dadu and thatta where as in general ,Matiari, Larkana, Khirpur , districts Are destroyed. Furthermore, as they are cut off from main towns in Swat, people from many areas cannot acquire timely health services. Pregnant women and children are the likely the worst-affected in this situation. Those affected people who are sick or injured are not receiving any treatment. In adults, the most common reported ailments were diarrhea and respiratory infections, while skin diseases and fever were also common. The same disease pattern was noted in children, with 31 percent of communities citing that diarrhea was the most common ailment, while 19 percent 14 reported respiratory infections as most prevalent. In addition, fever, scabies, and eye infections were frequently reported in children. As a large area of flood-affected of affected districts cut off from the main markets, food availability is scarce, and the situation is worsening with every passing day. But in this worst situation HANDS play a very praisabale role in flood affected district of SINDH .as we know that HANDS is one of the largest NGO of country having strong roots in the community and work in most of the districts of Sindh & Baluchistan,HANDS is currently working in 18 districts of Sindh and in Jafferabad & Quetta in Baluchistan since many years and has its regional offices at all places. HANDS has more than 1000 staff and about 100,000 volunteers available. HANDS has developed and established strong Community Base Organizations and their Net-works in all these districts. HANDS is counted one of the key organization In flood of Pakistan and in addition Established two Disaster Response Central Office at HANDS Regional Office one in northern Sindh in Sukkur, and other in sothern Sindh at Thatta and declared 11 regional offices in Sindh and 01 office in Quetta-Baluchistan as Emergency Response Centers. HANDS Liaison office Islamabad is active in mobilization of national & international resources. Moreover HANDS initiated its relief work by providing these IDPs food and safe drinking water and made coordination with other aid agencies for backing of flood affected people. Whereas HANDS have established more than 100 relief campsin district Sukkur, Shikarpur, Dadu ,Matiari, Larkana, Khirpur ,Kashmore ,Jacobabad and thatta districts. HANDS also planned establishment of many more relief camps, Tent cities in different districts of SINDH within couple of days. HANDS provided shelters to those whose houses have been damaged or destroyed not only provided shelters but also settled them in safe places where all facilities including food, water, latrines were provided.

NFIs were distributed to these and other flood-affected communities. Cooking utensils, water storage containers, and women/children hygiene kits were prioritized. As sewage systems had been blocked, provision of soap and towels will help reduce the risk of disease. Most of the affected population had limited access to clean drinking water but HANDS provided water through tankers, pipe line and hand pumps. Moreover, most of the water sources have been destroyed or contaminated. Considering the current situation, water purification tablets or drops were distributed; instructions and information sessions on regard health education were also given to flood affected people. In addition, medical services and medicines were given to given flood affected people. Child Friendly Spaces were established by HANDS in flood affected camps to provide children with a means of recreation and psychosocial support, to help alleviate their stress.
