Let us suppose that I have created an email ID and have an account on howheywork.com. Now I want to communicate with James@mindblowing.com. Let us further assume that I am using Outlook Express or any other stand alone email client. As soon as I set up my account on howtheywork.com, the Outlook Express is informed about the name of the mail server mail.howtheywork.com. Now what happens when I press the Send' button after composing message? SMTP server springs into action. Now let us have a glance over the following sequential steps of an SMTP mail server functioning.

Outlook Express builds up connection to SMTP server at mail.howtheywork.com. To accomplish this task, the server generally uses port 25.

After the connection is set up, Outlook Express converses with the server regarding the address of the sender as well as that of the recipient and body of the message too.

SMTP server breaks the address of the recipient into two parts the name of the recipient (James) and domain name (mindblowing.com). If another address has been added to to' box, then the message is handed over to the POP3 server for howtheywork.com with the help of delivery agent', a program having a short structure. Now as the recipient's email address is on another domain, so the server needs to interact with this domain.

The server then gets engaged into conversation with a domain name server or DNS to have the IP address of the SMTP server for mindblowing.com.

The server at howtheywork.com contacts the SMTP server at mindblowing.com via port 25. Message is delivered to the mindblowing server. When mindblowing server identifies the domain name for James is at mindblowing, then the email is handed over to the mindblowing's POP3 server and finally the message is sent to the james inbox.
