SOCCER THRILLS- Part 1
LATER IN 1908
After the 1900 and 1904 summer Olympics, soccer/football became an official competition at the 1908 summer Olympics. Although, planned by The Football Association (FA), the event was for amateur players only and was regarded suspiciously as a show rather than a competition. Great Britain was the champion of both the 1908 and 1912 summer Olympics (represented by the England national amateur team). By this time, the sport was making waves all around the world and was soon growing into a grand competition.
FIFA'S BIRTH IN 1904
With the founding of FIFA in 1904, an attempt was made by this strong international body to arrange an international tournament among nations outside the normal Olympic event in Switzerland. The event however, was described as a failure according to the official history of FIFA and that was believed to be due to the infant stage of the sport. The Olympic event however, continued its contest only between amateur teams.
SIR THOMAS LIPTON TROPHY TOURNAMENT
In 1909, Sir Thomas Lipton organized a trophy tournament named after him and was held in Turin. This tournament was a championship between individual clubs (not national teams) from different nations with each one representing an entire nation. The tournament featured the most prestigious professional club sides from Switzerland, Italy and Germany and its sometimes described as the first world cup. The Football Association of England refused to associate with the competition and declined the offer to send a professional team. Lipton invited West Auckland to represent England as an amateur team from County Durham. West Auckland won the tournament and returned in 1911 to successfully claim their title. They were given the trophy permanently according to the rules of the competition.
FIFA IN 1914
Fifa agreed to recognize the Olympic tournament as a "world football championship for amateurs", and decided to responsibly manage the event in 1914. This allowed for the world's first intercontinental football/soccer competition which took place in 1920 (summer Olympics). It was a contest by Egypt and thirteen European teams. The gold medals were won by Belgium. Uruguay won the subsequent Olympic football/soccer tournaments in 1924 and 1928. Finally, in 1928 FIFA made the decision to commence their own international tournament outside of the Olympics. With Uruguay now two-time football world champions from the start of FIFA's professional era in 1924, FIFA named Uruguay as the host country as FIFA also celebrated their centenary of independence in 1930.
