Protection.
You see your security system is actually divided into layers
of protection.Those layers are designed to stop a would be thief.
The three layers are :
Exterior Protection
Perimeter protection
Interior Protection
Here is a typical house layout for the first floor of a
residential structure.
Now let's talk about Exterior protection.
The best place to stop a thief is before they ever get near
your family or processions. This is the most difficult area to protect due
to a higher number of potential false alarms.
You have to be careful to not allow the wrong things to
cause an alarm.
Things like:
Animals
People walking by
Items blowing in the wind such as papers or boxes.
These potential false alarms can be lessened with the proper
placement and adjustments to your devices.
These devices can also be setup to only alert you and not to
actually send in an alarm.
Perimeter protection is the area surrounding your house.
This is your second layer of home protection. It is best to stop a would be
thief at this area. If a thief attempts to break in then as soon as they open a
window or a door the alarm will sound and in most cases this will scare the thief
away. This will result in a minimum of loss.
Interior protection is your last layer of protection. If an
intruder gets by your 1st 2 layers of protection then the
motion sensors will trigger an alarm.
Some thief's have been known to enter dwellings through a
space that is not protected. This could be by going through
a roof vent or attic vent where you would not traditionally
have any protection.
Some Exterior protection devices are:
1. Motion lights that come on when they detect motion
2. Exterior CCTV Cameras
3. Beam Detectors
Some Perimeter protection devices are:
1. Security Door Contacts
2. Window Contacts
3. Glass Break Sensors
Some Interior protection devices are;
1. Motion Sensors
2. Panic Switches
3. Key Fobs
There are additional types of protection for your home that
are not meant to stop an intruder. Not all potential hazards
to your home are from external forces.
Weather can also be a hazard to your home's well being. If
you are in an area that is subject to freezing weather then
you may need to consider freeze sensors. These devices can
be connected to your alarm system so that you can be
notified when temperatures reach a hazardous level.
Water damage can also be devastating to your home. There are
water detection devices that can be connected to your alarm
system that will also notify you of water accumulating in an
area that should otherwise be dry.
As you can see your alarm system can be utilized to protect
your home and family and you need to be careful when
