Sacred Mount Kenya Soars to the Heights of whl.travel

The towering peak of Mount Kenya in the African Central Highlands is so prominent that its ancient name now refers to the entirety of the country in which it stands. Set amidst unspoiled forests, flowing rivers and grassy savannahs approximately 150 kilometres north of the capital city of Nairobi, the mountainous region surrounding Mount Kenya has been protected as a national park since 1949 and is renowned for its scenery and rich biodiversity.

The main thrill for many travellers visiting the UNESCO World Heritage region in Kenya is the legendary trek to the summit of Point Lenana, which can be reached without any climbing. Active travelers who enjoy physical challenge might also opt for the five-day Mt Kenya: Sirimon/Naromoru Trek, which takes in the roof of the world for a breathtaking sunrise after an extra day at the Mackinders camp to allow for acclimatisation before the summit attempt. The routes and tour length vary, but each trek is a once-in-a-lifetime experience with equally breathtaking views.

In addition to the mountain heights, there is also a wide range of bush hikes, game drives and cultural interaction tours, as well as plenty of local hospitality, exceptional cuisine and easily accessible shopping.

The small towns of Embu, Nyeri, Nanyuki, Nyahururu, Meru, Naro Moru and Isiolo are all excellent jumping off points where travelers will find range of hotels. The Outspan Hotel in Nyeri, for example, has a beautiful wide verandah that is perfect for viewing of snowcapped Mount Kenya. For travellers that prefer the great outdoors, the Rhino Watch Safari Lodge is located in the heart of the Solio Game Reserve, a haven for the amazing and endangered black and white rhinos.
