Maasai Mara was named "seven wonders of the world" after an international voting for its efforts in conserving the wildlife and environment.Maasai Mara is situated in one of the Kenyas province Rift Valley and it is 350 kilometers from Nairobi by road and 45 minutes by air.

Maasai Mara have several airstrips that serves different lodges ,tented camps namely,Keekorok airstrip,Siana Springs airstrip,Olkiombo airstrip,Kichwa Tembo airstrip, cottars 1920 airstrip private, Mara Serena airstrip,Ngerende airstrip, Mara Shikar airstrip,Musiara airstrip. Apart from aircrafts we have hot balloons in the Maasai Mara operated by Tran world Safaris, Adventure aloft, Governors, Balloon Safaris which you can use to do an early game drive, sight seeing, scenic safari thereafter you have your breakfast with champagne.

There many hotel chains that operate in the Maasai Mara offering different tastes of services and products also segmented to meet ones needs or wants. Below find the hotel chains that operates at each airstrip,

Keekorok Airstrip

This serves Keekorok Lodge owned by Kenya Hotels & Wildlife, Mara Sarova owned by Sarova Hotels, Sekenani owned by Sekenani Camp, Mara Simba owned by Simba Lodges, Mara Sopa owned by Sopa Lodges, Cottars 1920 operated by Cheli & peacock, Mara Buffalo operated by Come to Africa Safaris,Siana Intrepid owned by Heritage Hotels. When booking ensure you thoroughly brief your clients when alighting in Mara to master the airstrip not the hotel as it might be confusing. For those going to Keekorok by road will not have to pay for game drives as they will use their vehicles but will pay park entry fees per day per person which is included in the road package. Those flying will also not pay for game drives and park entry fees as it is included in the flying package you can only pay game drive and park entry fees if you bought the services separately.

Siana Springs Airstrip

This airstrip serves Siana Intrepid but it is only suitable for private charters of 3 seater aircraft,5 seater and 6 seater otherwise with the big aircrafts operating schedule flights the passengers going to these airstrip alights at Keekorok Airstrip. It is okay for those going by road as they will have no restrictions even if they go with a truck or mini-bus.

Olkiombo Airstrip

It serves Mara Intrepids, Mara Explorer both owned by Heritage Hotels, Base camp Explorer owned by Basecamp Tours & Safaris, Mara Fig Tree owned by Manda Hotels, Porini owned by Game watchers Safaris, and private camping sites.

Kichwa Tembo Airstrip

It serves Kichwa Tembo Camp & Bateleur owned by & Beyond, Little governors owned by Governors, Mara River Camp owned by Savannah Hotels, Mpata Safari Club owned by Mpata Investments.

Musiaria Airstrip

It serves Main Governors, Ilmoran, little governors owned by Governors, Mpata Safari Club owned by Mpata Investments, Mara River Camp.

Mara Serena Airstrip

It serves Mara Serena owned by Serena Hotels.

Ngerende Airstrip

It serves Mara Safari Club owned by Fairmont Hotels, Kicheche Camp owned by Chameleon Safaris, Karen Blexin owned by Karen Blexin, David Livingstone owned by Aquava Agencies, Saruni owned by Saruni Hotels and it serves as an alternate for Mara Shikar Airstrip.

Mara Shikar Airstrip

It serves David Livingstone lodge owned by Aquava agencies, it is suitable for private charters of 3 seater,5 seater and 6 seater aircraft but not the big scheduled aircrafts and for road packages there are no restrictions you can even go in and get out with truck and mini-bus. It serves as an alternate for Ngerende airstrip.

It is important when making reservations also ask for the airstrip name which is most important though the pilots do announce but they might overlook it and your passengers ends up in a wrong airstrip thus forcing you to arrange for another flight which operates into the Mara at 1545 hrs thus inconveniencing your passengers. With road packages you don't need to know the airstrip name as you will be taken to the hotel that you booked.

Scheduled flights From Nairobi, Nanyuki, Mombasa to Maasai Mara

Out of Nairobi there are 2 daily scheduled flights one in the morning and the other one in the afternoon and there are 3 departures on each service out of Wilson Airport. Scheduled flights out of Nanyuki we have two departures at 1000am and 1030 am serving Meru,Mt. Kenya,Lewa Downs,Shaba,Joys Camp,Samburu to Maasai Mara and the flight back to Nanyuki.From Mombasa we have one daily scheduled flight 2 departures, departing at 0730 hrs from Mombasa to Ukunda,malindi then Maasai Mara and in the afternoon 2 departures, departing Maasai Mara at 1330 hrs to Malindi,Ukunda and Mombasa arrival Mombasa at 1630 hrs.Please note the aircraft will only route via Malindi when there are 5 passengers or you pay for 5 seats otherwise you will have to board or alight in Mombasa. Air tickets do differ from the point of departure and it is based on distance.

Private charter flights play a vital role when it comes to travelers with schedules that can not match the schedule service and we have air operators who have aircrafts ranging from 3 to 37 seater including helicopters for private charters.Private charter safaris are available on request depending with the number of people traveling and we do have jets can are restricted to some airstrips in Maasai Mara due to safety and their serviceability.

Hot Balloon safaris is available and we have balloons for 7 people and 11 people and it is charged per person and you need to book in advance and if you happen to be interested when you are in the Mara it will depend with availability and you know they are scarce and on high demand.

Road Safaris Maasai Mara

We have daily departures from Mombasa, Nairobi, Nanyuki, Malindi, Ukunda to Maasai Mara using Tour Vans and 4BY 4 vehicles' e.g Landcruiser,Land Rover, Trucks and it depends on where you want to visit. At times there is a minimum number of people that is required for a safari to take off or if clients are desperate they can pay for the remaining seats for the safari to take off. As you are driven to Maasai Mara as you branch to Mahi Mahiu you will see the view point and the Great Rift Valley and Lake Naivasha as you head to Maasai Mara. Due to bad roads it takes 3 hours 30 minutes from Nairobi and you can decide to leave Nairobi early morning or midday and out of Mara early morning or after lunch is you are only coming direct to Nairobi but if you are going to Samburu, Nanyuki you have to leave early and packed lunch is provided on request.

Klipspringer

A small, strongly built antelope, with a wedge shaped head and a thick coat of olive-yellow and grey hair.The muzzle is washed with brown and the chin and under parts is white. The large rounded ears are white-lined with prominent black markings. They have dark preorbital scent glands which are very pronounced. The legs are sturdy, terminating in black hooves which are specially adapted for rocky ground, giving the animal the appearance of standing on tiptoe.' The tail is very short and the horns are upright, measuring from 6-15cm in length, occurring in the females of some populations as well as the males.

An animal of steep, rocky hill sides and screes as well as isolated kopjes and high mountains, having been recorded as high as 4,000m on Mount Kilimanjaro. They live in pairs or in small family parties and can often be seen standing atop a rock or boulder keeping a sharp lookout for predators. They are extremely agile, being capable of racing over boulder-strewn terrain at high speed and with apparent ease. They feed on leaves, shoots and berries, taking fruits when available and very occasionally grass. The young are hidden during their first month of life, being visited by the female for suckling three of four times a day. At about one month old they will begin to accompany their mother during her daily foraging.

Bushbuck

One of the most elegant of Africa's antelopes, with rounded hindquarters slightly higher than shoulders. The colour of the coat varies greatly from yellowish-chestnut through reddish-brown to dark brown. The under parts of the male are black. They have a dorsal mane of longer hair running from the shoulder to the tail. The head is lighter in colour with a dark band extending along the muzzle and a white cheek patch. The body has white vertical stripes and spots, mainly on the hindquarters and the back. The tail is bushy, white underneath, with a black tip. The horns are almost straight, with a single spiral varying in length from30-57cm and only occur in the male.

An animal of forest edges and dense thickets, usually living singly or in pairs, but occasionally in small family groups. They are extremely secretive, hiding away during daylight hours in dense cover, feeding mainly during the night. Their main food consists of leaves and shoots, but they will dig for roots and tubers and plunder vegetable gardens from time to time. They will also associate with troops of baboons and monkeys, feeding on the fallen fruit shaken from trees by the primates as they feed. When alarmed by the approach of a predator, the bushbuck's usual response is to freeze, in the hope of being overlooked.
