Safe And Effective Puppy Training

Puppy training should be done in a manner that is both safe and effective

, and ideally should start from the time you bring your puppy home from the store or shelter. Before you start training your puppy, remember that you need to focus on teaching it the right things by rewarding good behavior, and not punishing bad behavior at a time when your puppy still doesn't know what you exactly want him or her to do.

If you focus only on teaching your puppy what not to do, you may be on the wrong track. Every puppy needs a chance to learn on its own, to develop a sense of right and wrong through positive reinforcement.

If you wish that your puppy does the right thing at an early age, avoid saying, or even worse, shouting the word "No". It would be much more advisable to have your puppy retry the exercise or retry certain steps. Do not hold back rewards for partially performed behaviors - reward your puppy whenever he or she does something right, no matter how small it is.

Let us cite an example. Let's say you have a pair of expensive shoes and you catch your dog using them as a chewable treat. Instinctively, you run over, scream the word "Nooooo!", but by doing so here's what could possibly happen.

The first possibility is that your dog would cower in panic and realize that developing permanent teeth shouldn't be done in your presence. Your dog would then refuse to upset you openly, and will stick to chewing on things while you're gone. Take note that your dog didn't mean anything wrong - it was just following its best judgment.

Nobody wants doggy business all over the living room, so crate training is a nice way to take care of two things - training your dog to go outside if he or she needs to eliminate waste, as well as ensuring a safe training process in general. The more your puppy goes outside to relieve himself or herself, and the more you reward this good deed, the more your puppy would understand where he or she should do its business.

This is a form of puppy training that is built on repeated success rather than making your pet fear your very presence. You are not ruling by fear, but rather building your dog's confidence and understanding of what's right.

Your dog has a better chance of retaining its positive outlook if you continuously stick by this training regimen of positive reinforcement of good behaviors and actions. This would bode well for your dog's behavior as an adult, as it would have developed good values and a sense of respect for you as its owner and master.
