Safe Driving In The Winter Period
Winter can be a treacherous time for drivers for a number of reasons not only is
there less daylight than you may be used to, but you will also have to contend with icy roads, sudden blizzards, car breakdowns and increased traffic, particularly in the run up to Christmas.
Depending on the climate that you live in, the actual conditions you will be driving in will vary obviously if you are living somewhere that is prone to large snow outbreaks, you will have to invest in heavier-duty equipment than in warmer climates.
One of the most common causes of accidents in the winter is due to icy roads; sometimes it can be incredibly hard to even see if a road is going to be icy until you are skidding along it. It is vital that you check weather reports and keep your speed down, as it will be far easier to control yourself on the ice.
You may also be driving normally when you are suddenly struck by an unforeseen blizzard whilst these may cause no more threat than your typical rainstorm, they can seriously block your vision and the friction on the roads. As with ice, it is vital to slow down, switch on your headlights and windscreen wipers, and, if the snow is too heavy, stop the car and call for assistance.
You may have noticed in the morning that your car is frosted up and covered in snow never assume that this will simply pass with a couple of swipes with the windscreen wipers, or that you only need to be able to see out of a small patch youve scraped off in front of the drivers seat. Far too many drivers assume this and are putting themselves and others in serious danger not only will you be seriously restricting your field of vision, you also face other snow on the car being displaced and covering up your only viewpoint.
Batteries and electrics are going to take a lot of punishment in the winter period, particularly if you are working a 9-5 job often it will be darker in the morning, requiring you to have headlights on (as well as the heating!) and again in the afternoon, which can be a serious drain on the battery. Try and keep heating down to a comfortable level, you dont need to pretend youre in summer, remember, and turn off rear window heating once the ice has defrosted.
