At some point in each of our driving lives, it is necessary to get a "tune up" on our skills. It is amazing to think that you take a test when you first get your license at age 16 and after that, your driving skills are never tested again. Outside of the occasional eye exam when you renew your license and aside from major driving problems (like having your license revoked by the state) most of us breeze through life, forgetting the lessons that we were taught when we first got our license. Remember, bad driving skills pose the greatest danger to you in your everyday life, whether they are yours or someone else's. Therefore, follow these tips to stay safe:* Do not stare at the road like you are hypnotized. Your eyes should always be moving while you are driving in order to stay aware of dangerous situations before they happen.* Use your mirrors. Regardless of what you may believe, the rearview mirror is not a tool for lipstick application. You need to use this mirror to see what is happening behind you. The best driver's are aware what is happening on all sides of their car.* Provide yourself with a way to get out of a situation where an accident could happen. Good driver's essentially leave themselves an "out." This is somewhere they can direct their vehicle to in case of emergency. It could be making sure you can get into another lane, have adequate distance between you and the car in front of you, or you do not allow yourself to be boxed in on all four sides. By doing this and staying defensive while behind the wheel, you will know that regardless of the situation that could present itself, you have thought out your options.* Never assume the person next to you can see you. The same thing goes for the person in front of you. After all, they could be using their rearview mirror to check their lipstick.* Maintain a normal or average speed while driving. Just as speeding can be hazardous, driving too slow can also be dangerous to you and the drivers around you. While we would never encourage "keeping up with the pace of traffic" and going too fast, it is necessary for you to drive a reasonable speed and pick an appropriate lane to be in, especially on the expressway.* Always consider the weather. Just because you think you are a great driver and that nothing is going to happen to you in hazardous conditions because you understand how to handle your car in rain or snow or ice doesn't mean that the other people on the road can say the same thing. Don't take unnecessary risks when the weather is bad. Honor what the weatherman is predicting and consider each trip on a case by case basis. Chances are that trip to the mall can wait until it stops snowing and that unnecessary trip to a friend's house in hurricane-like rain can be put on hold until the sky clears.Remember, a car is a major piece of machinery and can be deadly. It is the responsibility of every driver to consider road conditions and not be oblivious to situations happening around them. Stay aware, keep your eyes peeled and realize that you are never too old for a refresher course on the rules of the road. Your life, and the safety of those around you, depend on it.
