Safely Driving

The world simply does not have enough safe drivers out there. I am proud to say that I am one of the driving minorities who actually practices and puts into action safe driving habits. So, what are some examples of safe driving?

Usually, you see tailgaters when you are driving in a lot of traffic and one person is following the other person so closely that you become fearful that if the one person stops, the other will almost certainly crash into them from behind. However, most people are guilty of tailgating when they approach a traffic light and do not leave enough distance between themselves and the driver in front of them. So, why is this important you might wonder? For starters, when you stop so close behind someone, in the even that the person in front of you suddenly breaks down or becomes immobile, you don't have a way to get out from behind them unless no one is behind you (which is usually not the case while you are on the road). Also, in the event that there is an emergency vehicle that needs to get by and is approaching you from behind, you have not left yourself enough space to be able to maneuver out of the way. Lastly, if you notice that the driver behind you isn't paying attention and is about to crash into you, you do not have enough wiggle room to get out of harm's way.

The point of driving is to get you around from place to place in the safest manner possible as efficiently as possible. And with the massive accumulation of people who have begun to populate various areas of the country, it is becoming increasingly difficult to protect ourselves from all of the bad drivers that are out there. While some of us question the ease with which one may acquire a driver's license, it seems that there are many other factors that are contributing towards the unsafe driving habits that so many people of all ages are developing.

It's not just the teenagers who are guilty of texting while behind the wheel. Rather, many young professionals are to blame for the distractions that they experience while driving due to smart phones that allow them to check their email, send updates and create work calendars for them...all while they are driving. What did we ever do before cell phones came into existence? In the split second that it takes you to look down and check an email, a child or small animal can run into the street. Additionally, a car could stop short for no apparent reason or swerve into your lane- all things that you could better react to if you aren't distracted. So, the next time you climb behind the wheel of your car, focus on where you are going and the manner in which you are getting there.
