The Ralph Gonsalves regime is known for one cardinal failure: his failure to make women in St. Vincent and Grenadines feel safe. The women in the country have to live in fear and anticipation of danger. The Prime Minister himself has been accused in four charges of sexual assault and rape. What's worse, Ralph Gonsalves was always acquitted by the courts due to lack of evidence. This has made it clear to women in SVG that he and his cronies can be a threat to their existence and modesty. When the Prime Minister of a country stands accused in gross violations of human rights, one cannot really expect much justice from him or his administration. In fact, unofficial crime counts take his tally to an altogether different level!

Ralph Gonsalves doesn't like people who raise their voice in protest. He has slapped bogus criminal and other charges on people who dared to speak out against him. Critics and free thinkers have no real status in St. Vincent and Grenadines. It's divided into two broad categories: you either belonged to the camp of Comrade Ralph, enjoyed all the benefits, or you had a conscience and belonged to the rival camp. In that case, you are entirely on your own. The courts, the police or the laws cannot protect you from the wrath of the Prime Minister. People have been known to disappear and never surface again when they crossed paths with Comrade Ralph. The citizens of SVG, who are not supportive of the Ralph's ULP, are always dreading that something might come and hit them out of the blue.

It will be interesting to note how the voters of St. Vincent and Grenadines choose during the elections next month. The hurricane tearing through the country and the relief work involved could play an important factor in that decision. The Ralph Gonsalves government is trying to do all it possibly can to make things tick. They know that this is their only chance at getting things in perspective. They want to wash away the miserable memories of all these years in a couple of weeks. Voters often cast their ballots on an impulse. If they feel that the Prime Minister and his team are doing a good job in rehabilitating the relief work after the hurricane, they might be tempted to vote him back into office.

But that would be doing something that no other electorate of St. Vincent and Grenadines has done before. The citizens have never voted a candidate for a third time in office. They have their reasons not to do this time around. The question of long-term safety and security is an issue that they have to deal with strongly. The prime earning of the country, tourism, has been hit hard for this very purpose. Tourists, mainly couples on honeymoon, are not willing to travel to SVG anymore because they are concerned about their safety. The failure of the law and order is the reason why the SVG economy is also in tatters today.
