Safety Organizations Call For Increased Back Up Camera Use
Since 2010 the NHSTA (National Highway Safety Transportation Administration) has been advocating for increased use of vehicle back up cameras
. The NHSTA is bogged down in some regulatory and bureaucratic issues that are preventing it from making a full throttle endorsement, but that has not stopped several advocacy groups from going ahead and demanding that truck back up cameras be attached to all vehicles.
Boca Raton, Florida, a community that is home to many children and elderly people, has already began calling residents to install vehicle back up cameras as a matter of community safety. State lawmakers around the country are coordinating with the NHSTA to get more information about the camera as to join forces to encourage their use. Jan Schakowsky, an Illinois Democrat and sponsor of the Cameron Gulbransen Kids Transportation Safety Act, has called on a final standardization of back up camera system guidelines to encourage their wider use.
Millions of parents and concerned citizens around the country have already taken it upon themselves to install back up camera systems. Their reasoning ranges from altruistic concerns about the safety of the community to more practical concerns about protecting their vehicles from costly accidents. As a concerned citizen quoted in the Boca New said, "Today just about every cell phone you purchase today comes with a camera. Is it too much to ask to have a camera on our vehicles to save a life?"
Even national advocacy groups are joining the crusade to further the use of back up camera systems. Kids and Cars is a national organization dedicated to preventing motor vehicle accidents and fatalities in kids. They have come out in strong support of backup camera systems. The group distributes blind zone education kits to parents that include cones and measuring sticks, but these are not as good backup camera systems. Kids and Cars states that two kids die weekly and 48 are injured in back-over accidents. Keep in mind these statistics reflect on minors.
Increasingly society is beginning to view the vehicle back up camera as not a frill item but a safety essential like a car seat and or seat belts. Parents in communities with many kids are leading the charge but politicians, non-profits, and others have also gotten behind the cause.
If you are interested in such a camera you can easily purchase and install one yourself. I would suggest looking online for a camera for your car, truck, or RV.
