Safety Tips For Landfill Machinery Operation

Landfill mining involves excavating and processing solid landfill waste in order to reduce landfill mass or temporarily remove hazardous materials

. Different types of mining machines, such as excavators and front end loaders, are required to the get the job done safely and efficiently. As with any job that involves heavy machinery and hazardous materials, certain safety precautions must be taken when landfill mining to prevent accidents and reduce the risk of harmful contamination. Below, find several safety tips to keep in mind when operating landfill machinery and working with hazardous waste material.

Proper Training:

When working on any jobsite, no matter the industry, the proper training is necessary to ensure that workers understand how to operate machinery and what to do should an emergency occur. Before entering the jobsite or working with certain equipment, a detailed training plan must take place. Workers should understand how to correctly mount machinery (using three points of contact and keeping hands free of other objects) and dismount machinery (setting the parking brake and carefully examining the ground conditions). Workers should also understand the required personal protective equipment for various situations and its appropriate uses.

Personal Protective Equipment:

Working in landfills exposes workers to hazardous materials that could contaminate the skin and spread disease or infection. The proper clothing should cover the skin sufficiently to avoid excess exposure, yet should also allow workers to move and breathe comfortably. Once the mining equipment is up and running, hearing protection is necessary to protect the ears and reduce the risk of hearing loss. Additional safety gear includes helmets, steel-toed boots, reflective clothing, leather gloves and safety glasses.

Machinery Inspection:

Before entering and operating a piece of mining machinery, it is critical to inspect the equipment to ensure it is in proper working condition. Walk-around inspections involve looking for leaks, component or transmission failures, debris buildup, and any other safety concerns, and should be performed three times a day. By catching problems early, you can prevent accidents from occurring and repair problems before they become more serious.

Fire Prevention:

Fires in landfills can spread quickly, causing sparks that land on machinery and create even more dangers. Workers should understand fire prevention safety in order to prevent disaster. Minimizing risk involves being able to recognize potential fire starters and prevent them from occurring. Workers should also know how to react in case a fire starts. Placing fire extinguishers inside the equipment and making sure each worker knows how to use them properly can help keep everyone safe.

When working on the jobsite, always remember to be alert, and to wear your seatbelt when operating equipment. Following these tips and guidelines are the first steps toward a safer jobsite.
