Safety Tips For Moving Day
Be prepared - moving day is going to be extremely chaotic with several things going on at once
. Not only you need to keep a cool head, but you also you need to ensure the safety of the people working in your home as well as your family.
Here are a few tips to help you along:
Clothing and footwear should be comfortable and you should ensure they don't create a problem. For instance, loose sleeves or shirttails that might get snagged. Wear durable supportive footwear, with good grip, particularly if surfaces should become wet. Sandals shouldn't be worn as it can lead to scraped toes.
The space should be well-organized to ensure that high-traffic areas are clear of obstacles. Heavy and light boxes should be set aside from the start. Inform the movers about which boxes need special care. You don't want boxes toppling over and the contents spilling out.
When boxes or items are being passed on to someone else, do ensure they have a strong grip on it before you let go or else it might fall on the person's feet and cause serious injuries
The move should be smooth so that there are no collisions or people getting in the way. Talk to the movers so that they coordinate their movements accordingly. Assembly line set-up tends to work best, with one or two people on the truck to load it while others are managing the removal of items from the house.
If Items need more than two people to lift it, you should always have an extra person around - someone who can direct the group and provide support if someone slips and isn't able to carry their end of the load.
Children should always be kept out of the way on moving day. Ask your friends to baby-sit your children on that day or ask them to play with the neighbor's children during the move.
Pets should also be left at a friend's or neighbor's house because they need to be away from the noise and confusion so that they don't get in the way.
Specialty items like pianos, large appliances and valuable antiques, come under the category that needs additional assistance. So check beforehand to make sure the movers have the proper equipment to lift them onto the truck. Here too, accidents might happen and the item might be damaged as well.
Keep a first-aid box handy to include band aids, aspirin and medicated ointment in case someone injures himself.
