An elderly person should avoid wearing headphones. They can be distracting and can also cut off an important sense for be aware of what is going on around you in the environment.

They should always let someone know where they are going and the route they plan to take. They should also inform them of what time they plan to return.

It is important to keep emergency items in the car, such as a hat, sun block, and shovel, bottle of water, battery charger, a spare tire, flashlight, umbrella, maps and first aid kit.

One should keep a fully charged cell phone (with the charger) with you at all times in case of emergency.
