Safety Tips For Using Bunk Beds

Parents usually have problems pertaining to limited living space available while designing their kids' room

. Bunk beds and loft beds have been a popular solution to this dilemma since long. A bunk bed is a type of bed in which one bed frame is stacked on top of another while a loft bed is a bunk bed that has only the top bunk, creating an open space underneath that can be occupied by a chest, drawers, or even a work area.

But this space saving scheme has certain gimmicks which unfortunately makes the children prone to injuries. Parents rushing their children to doctors due to fall from their bunks beds or loft beds are not an uncommon sight. Here are the necessary safety precautions one should keep in mind while using bunk beds especially kids' bunk beds:

Guard Rails

Any bunk bed like metal bunk bed or loft bed like wood loft bed you purchase should have guard rails on both sides. The guard rail should be at least five inches high above the mattress. This will prevent the bed occupant from rolling off from the bed and potentially injuring himself.

Again, the guard rail height should not exceed three inches so as to cause inconvenience while climbing the bunk and stumble off the frame. As a safety precaution, wooden boards can be hammered in the space between the mattress and guard railings.

Mattress

A perfect size mattress should be used. At times, old small sized mattresses are used to fit the beds. This can lead to trapping of the limbs in the frame. Check that the mattress foundation is properly suspended above the lower bunk or space. If the bed has a wooden platform, reinforce the mattress with metal strap.

Some other important precautions to be followed are:

No ceiling fans should be installed in the rooms where bunk beds or loft beds are used.

If ceiling fans are required anyhow, ensure that they are at a considerable safe distance from the bunks.

Also, keep time to time checks on the pillars or poles supporting the bed frame.

If the poles are unbalanced due to wear and tear, the bunk beds will turn rickety. At such instances provide required padding to the base of the poles.

A considerable portion of the accidents occur due to the ladders. Ensure that the ladder is properly installed and fastened to the bunk.

The bunk bed should conform to the ASTM standards for bunk beds.

Similar precautions should be observed even while using futon bunk beds. Basically, before purchasing any metallic bunk bed or wood loft bed, examine the material used in the bed frame and also that they adhere to the standard guidelines.
