What you can do to start the test is to place your foot against the foot of the bunk and then try to pull it towards you. A rule of thumb with this test is that you should not be able to raise the posts of the bed from the ground regardless if you are a relatively strong person.

As much as possible, choose the lowest kids bed bunk. Put in mind that, the lower the bunk, the less risk for your children to have injuries. According to safety rules, the recommended bunk height is 1550 mm to the top of the upper mattress. This height is fair enough to keep you children from acquiring bruises and broken arms if they accidentally fall from the bed.

The design of the bunk bed furniture should not have any hanging points where the clothes of children can get caught up, and there should be no gaps or holes that could trap the head, legs or arms. Unless the bed can be bolted on the wall, make sure that it has guardrails on both of its sides""one on the side of the wall and the other on the side facing the door; this can prevent your children sliding down the gap or trapping their heads. It is also important that the release mechanism of the guardrails is strong enough, so that the children will not release them accidentally. As for the mattresses, make use of the mattress height indicator to properly select the right ones for your children; remember that if a mattress is too thick it can reduce the effectiveness of the safety rails.

If you don't like to put your children on elevated beds but are still having issues with space, you can always opt for trundle beds. These beds are also space efficient and durable. However, if you really have to use bunk beds for your children's room, make sure that you place your child under nine years old at the bottom bunk as it has been found out that children under this age have particularly high rate of injury in bunk beds. It is after the age of 12 years old that bunk-related accident declines.
