Safety at Workplace Using First Aid Kits
Every organization tries to provide maximum safety for their employees. If any employee needs medical assistance, having immediate first aid supplies can minimize the effects and increase the chance of survival for him/her. However, storing these first aid supplies at workplace needs some considerations:
1. Depending upon the number of employees in the company, the contents and the quantity of the first aid kits should be decided. For instance, a sufficiently suitable first aid kit for ten people needs to contain nearly 20 plasters, 2-4 eye pads, 4-8 triangular and small bandages, 6-10 safety pins, 8-10 sterilized dressing kits, some wipes and at least one pair of gloves. All the material needs to be disposable. Similarly, a first aid kit for a company employing nearly 40 to 50 people should be assembled considering the medication needs of several people at one time.
2. The first aid kits that are supplied along with the suitable brackets for wall mounting should be used in the workplaces. This is because at the time of hazard, anyone should be able to pick them out from the mounting and can use them without spending a lot of time trying to find them and re-plug them into their mounts.
3. In case the first aid kits are stored in the lockable cabinets, there are two things to be taken care of. Firstly, the key to the cabinet should be easily accessible to anyone so that response time during the disaster may be reduced. Secondly, replenishing the used and emptied content from the first aid kits must not be forgotten just because they are stored in the locked cabinets.
4. It is also wise to assign the roles of fire warden and health and safety warden to few members of your staff based on a volunteering basis.
The first aid kits should be stored in a visible location from most of the areas in the office and in translucent bags. This way their accessibility will increase, which will again help people reach out to them faster in cases when they need to be accessed quickly.
