Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Movie Review

. But in fact, thats where the film begins as director Tigmanshu Dhulia takes you on an enriching cinematic experience.
The head and the heart need to be on the same tangent to weave a story thats absorbing enough to leave time unimportant and presence of superstars trivial and Tigmanshu has done that with the witty and engrossing Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster (SBAG), which might be an adaptation of the classic Saheb Biwi Aur Ghulam, but has an identity and attitude of its own.
Iss haveli me sirf wafadaar reh sakte hain, tells the tempestuous Rani (Mahie Gill) to her newly appointed driver. Aap wafadar hain? questions the driver. Thus, begins the lethal liaison between the Begum and the Gangster, away from the knowledge of the Saheb an egotistical royal scion of Deogarh minus the riches. Rutba hai, rupya nahi, explains his state in this royal threesome, which in fact is a foursome, as Saheb is addicted to his mistress Mahua (Shreya Narayan), so akin to the royalty. The gangster Ba-ba-loo (Randeep Hooda) - accused of almost killing her girlfriends lover agrees to serve the queen to help Gainda Singh (Vipin Sharma) in winning the political battle with Saheb and save himself from police. But, thats just the tip of the ice berg that lies beneath this ocean of twists and turns.
The real hero of the movie is the taut and crisp script that keeps you on the edge.Theres no dull moment as the director keeps removing one layer after the other to surprise, shock and stun the audience. The narrative is embellished with strong dramatic sequences, especially towards the second half when a love-obsessed Babloo conspires against Saheb and his mistress or when the otherwise mentally unstable Rani makes a smart choice between Saheb and Babaloo.The characters are well-etched with no hero and villain demarcation as each bears a shade of grey and you fail to find your favourite.Even the supporting cast including Sahebs right hand Kanahiya, his daughter Suman (Deepal Shaw), his step-mother have a bearing on the main plot thereby adding unpredictability to the movie.
Though the movie has been gaining quite some flak for the explicit physical intimacy that it bears. But, the passion soirees make a support system for the plot and dont look tasteless despite being quite bold. At the same time, at no point does romance take over the principal nature of the plot, which is devious, scheming and thrilling.
Another high point of the movie is the mood and setting of the story. Tigmanshu has beautifully recreated the bygone royal era an era that was once oozing with luxury and opulence but stands washed out today. The peeled off paint, dull portraits in Sahebs abode and thinning number of his aides testify his fading royalty. It is heart wrenching to see how hard he is strives to keep clinging to the dwindling empire.The dialogues are the soul of the movie. From powerful punches to scathing remarks and intense verbal duels - the film truly boasts of some taalimaar entertainment. Must say, you hardly get to see such writing these days.
The success of alternate cinema depends to a great extent on the performances. And in this movie, every actor has proved his/her mettle.Jimmy Shergill, Mahie Gill and Randeep Hooda imbibe the unpredictability of the script in their acting as well. Jimmy Shergill is perfect at the arrogant Nawab. Mahie Gill is an enchantress. Its remarkable to see how she switches over from being a mad woman to a clever manipulator. Randeep Hooda has finally got a mauka that does justice to his acting prowess. After doing blink and miss roles in Monsoon Wedding, Once Upon A Time In Mumbai and Ru-Ba-Ru to name a few Randeep has finally arrived with SBAG.Deepraj Rana as Kanahiya is impressive, while Mahua does all the talking with her rustic sex appeal. Deepal Shaw has fared well despite a small role.
Musically the movie is a smooth ride, with no song falling out of place.Raat Mujhse..and Jugni being the most catchy. Camera work is super fine at capturing the essence of the characters, the setting and the scenes.
Director Tigmanshu Dhulia deserves a pat on his back for giving us a truly hatke film after long complete with a strong storyline, thrilling script and stellar performances.At the same time, it might not click with all types of audiences. But all good movies are not money churners.However, a milestone in the careers of everyone associated, Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster is highly recommended!
