Saint Vincent and the Grenadines: An Overview of Its Problems
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is a well known Honey moon destination in the Caribbean. The country until recent times was largely dependent on banana harvest and was known as the largest banana producer in the Caribbean. However, due to the damages by several natural calamity and other external factors this banana production has dropped significantly giving rise to unemployment and poverty. Unfortunately, the government in this country has failed considerably to establish production of any new crop or any other industry till date. The country has earned a name as a honeymoon destination, but that however, has not yield hefty revenue and has not lowered the unemployment rate considerably. This way, unemployment and poverty remains two most vital problems of the economy of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines till date.
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines till date remains a Caribbean country that is yet to cope with the basic things a nation needs in order to become sound. The country lacks employment and the people here are poor. This has lead to a rise of marijuana harvest in the country. In fact, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is considered as one of the largest marijuana producer in the Caribbean. The country is dominated by a single drug lord. However, the present ULP government has done nothing to capture him or to cut down his operations in the country. For this reason the Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves has faced some criticism in the international circuit as well. However, nothing much has been done to cope with the situation.
Crime has also been a rising problem for Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. The country has a high crime rate much of which owes to its marijuana production. Apart from that the country also has several reported cases of murder, theft and several sexual assault cases against women. There are a number of rape cases filed every year in this country. According to the UN reports, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines has the third highest number of reported rape cases. In every 10000 people there have been 112 cases of rape reported in this country which is considerably high when compared to an average of 15 such cases in every 10000 people in the other countries under UN. However, in this case too, the government as well as the police authority has done almost nothing. The police authority been very negligent about rape issues and they only sent a few cases for trial.
In above light one can comfortably say that the government has been a complete failure in providing the people of this country with adequate resources. There are not sufficient jobs or other employment opportunities. The government has found no solution to the poverty issues as well. The government has been a complete failure in taming down the marijuana production as well as the drug dealers neither did they do anything to control the crime. All the nine years
