Multipurpose motors; universal motors and AC/DC motor
An electric motor is a very popular and a very widely used electric machine that works by converting electrical energy into mechanical energy. The mechanical energy so produced is used in a wide variety of purposes like in fans, in
pumps and blowers, in machine tools, in household appliances, in power tools etc. In fact, electric motors are also found in the small sized electric wristwatches. The electric motor operates through the interaction of magnetic field and current-carrying conductors. This interaction generates the mechanical force. The electric motors are referred to as electric machines more commonly. The general construction of an electric motor includes a moving part known as the rotor and a stationary part known as the stator.
A universal motor is a kind of electric motor that has a series wound motor and is designed in such a manner that it can operate either in AC or DC power. The universal motor can function well on
AC motor as the current in both the field and the armature will alternate and reverse polarity in synchronism. As a result of this, the mechanical force produced by a universal motor is always in a constant direction of rotation. The universal motor works on a single phase ac or dc power. The universal motors are manufactured in size ranging from 1/200 to 1/3 horsepower. However, the universal motors can also be obtained for special conditions by ordering the universal motor separately. The fractional horsepower type of universal motors is used in household devices like vacuum cleaners, sewing machines, food mixers and power hand tools. The working of a universal motor resembles the working of a series dc motor to a great extent. However, the universal motors do not run at a constant speed and run as fast as the load permits. One special feature of the universal motor is that it has the highest horse-power to weight ratio among all types of electric motors.
The ac/dc motors are the most common type of electric motors. While the dc motor is powered by direct current, an ac motor is supplied with alternating current that makes it unnecessary for an ac motor to have a commutator. There is almost always a an internal mechanism in an electric motor like a commutator that can convert an ac motor to a dc motor or vice versa.
These motors are manufactured under the supervision of experts and can also be customized for special applications.
An electric motor is probably one of the most commonly used electrical devices. Depending upon its working and on its construction, the electric motor can be categorized into different types. The universal motors and the ac/dc motors are few common type of electric motors that find extensive use in not just household purposes but in industrial appliances too.
